As we head into the 24’-25’ football season, we can’t forget to look back at the previous years. Let’s highlight some of the ways we got to the team we see today.
Since head coach Nino White arrived in 2019, the team has made a big change for the better. The overall scores have gone up for the past 4 years, starting at 2-5, 7-5, and last year having their best year yet with 11-2. The 24’-25’ year is off to a good start with having a score of 4-1.
Taking a deep dive on what things play into the success of this team, starting off by asking seniors on the team how the team has changed as years go on with two different perspectives.
“I feel like there are a lot of differences between last year and this year’s team. The main difference I was saying is the energy this team brings, and how we are a more confident team. Another reason will be the depth this team has. We went from having 35-40 players max to 65-80 max after cutting kids at tryouts, and the practices are more competitive, good on good, best on best.”, says Jeremiah Parker (Sr).
This will be the 5th year senior Jeremiah Parker has been a part of the Atherton Football Program. He highlights the team’s community and positive energy that has grown with the team’s successes.
To get a different opinion, we also asked the question to senior Benen Lo (OL)
“I think the team dynamic needs work! Currently, I don’t think there is a strong culture in the team. There’s a bunch of transfers and random kids coming from here and there, and since the coaching staff is newer to the school that doesn’t help build a strong Atherton culture. Lots of schools have little league teams or feeder schools where the kids grow up and play together, but when you come to Atherton you don’t have that. There are too many cultures clashing and dividing the team. But like I said, the young staff and team have time to improve and get better.”, says Benen Lo (Sr)
This will be Benen’s 4th year with the team. There are obviously two different perspectives on how the teams are growing. One sees the highlights of the team growing, but with that comes new people added on to the previous players.
The teams are evolving and it may take work to make an amazing community, but Coach White is definitely up to the challenge. seeing what Nino White does with this growing team this season.
