Atherton’s chapter of The National Honors Society welcomed its new members on September 25th. The induction ceremony, which took place in the auditorium, celebrated the addition of the class of 2027’s accepted NHS candidates. Current chapter members, family members of inductees, and Atherton staff were all in attendance. Speeches were given by chapter officials, chapter advisors Phil Hoagland and Virginia Nelson, and principal Stephanie Fluhr.

Current chapter members greeted guests as they arrived at the school and helped serve refreshments after the ceremony. William Schroll (12) was one of the members helping out.
“[The current members] goal was to indict the juniors into the program, and I was an usher, so I was greeting in,” Schroll said. “we helped greet people to get inside, direct where they could sit and overall, yeah, it went well.”
Elliot Williams (11) was one of the candidates inducted into the chapter.

“I felt really honored and proud of myself for making it,” Williams said about being a part of the ceremony. “ It seemed really welcoming to become a part of NHS.”
Wesley Drake (12), president of the NHS chapter, put in a lot of work to organize the event.
“I helped organize a lot of it…I got the cake, and I helped organize people and where they fall into like places. So all the volunteers that helped set up, take down [decorations/tables] all of that. I helped organize that, as well as Audrey, who was a big help with that, who’s the secretary [of the NHS chapter], and I don’t know, just being there, being someone to come to if you have questions, that’s really been it,” Drake said.

National Honors Society is an organization that recognizes high school students for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Members of the chapter have to complete certain requirements, including completing 40 hours of community service and completing a torchbearer, a community service project organized and carried out by an NHS member. Juniors have the chance to apply in the fall of each school year by filling out an application that includes an essay, teacher recommendations, and a list of community service and leadership positions.
With the induction of the new candidates, there are now 70 students involved in the chapter. With such a large group of motivated members, the Atherton Chapter of NHS has lots of potential.
