Atherton offers a variety of languages for students to take, Japanese being one of them. Sensei Kluemper teaches Japanese 1, 2, 3, and IB Japanese.
Students who take the Japanese class learn to speak, read and write Japanese, and even have the opportunity to go to Japan during the summer.
Kluemper began teaching in America 32 years ago. His teaching career began in Japan, where he taught English as a second language. His first teaching job in the US was teaching middle school art. Sensei Kluemper started teaching at Atherton 9 years ago.
Before teaching Japanese, Sensei Kluemper was an Art Education major in college.
“I was an Art Ed major in college and became interested in East Asian art, mostly ceramics,” Kluemper says.
Outside of school Sensei Kluemper enjoys reading, painting, traveling, and spending time with his family.
