As the new year starts, new movies and TV shows are being announced or released. A lot of the upcoming adaptations are from popular books. Ranging from all genres, 2025 is set to release a thrill of movies and TV shows coming to big screens and your living room.
Young Adult:
The popular YA trilogy A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, written by author Holly Jackson, premiered last year. The first season follows the first book. The book is about Pip Fitz-Amobi, a teenager who chooses to investigate a prior murder in her town as a school project. A popular teenage girl, Andie Bell, was murdered by her boyfriend Sal Singh five years ago. Sal also died. Pip relies on Sal’s brother, Ravi, to help her uncover the truth behind the murder and protect themselves in the process. The show was picked up by BBC Three in 2023, releasing July 10th, 2024. Netflix began streaming the show internationally August 1st. The second season was announced in November following the second book, Good Girl Bad Blood.
The 2021 romance novel People We Meet on Vacation by author Emily Henry was adapted by Netflix in 2024. The book follows two polar-opposite best friends, Poppy and Alex. Every summer, for a decade, the pair goes on a vacation to a new place lasting a week. That is until two years ago, when the friendship was ruined and hasn’t had any contact. Poppy, needing a break from her reality, contacts Alex for one last vacation together. The two of them have a week to repair their friendship, possibly digging a deeper hole or spark of romance. The upcoming film will be directed by Brett Haley. Poppy will be played by Emily Jane who stars in Amazon Prime’s My Lady Jane. Alex will be played by Tom Blyth, popular for his role in The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes. The movie is yet to have a release date.
Fantasy/Fiction:
Mickey 17–Originally Mickey 7–by author Ashton Edward releases March 7th, 2025. The film is a science fiction comedy film written and directed by Bong Joon-Ho, a South Korean director. Joon-Ho is most known for writing and directing the popular thriller Parasite. The plot follows a man who signs up as an “expendable” in space, not knowing what entails. Everytime Mickey dies he later gets cloned, creating seventeen “Mickies”. Many themes are present throughout the movie; Bong examines themes of identity, colonialism, and existentialism. He wants to explore each clone of Mickey. Robert Pattinson plays all the varieties of Mickies.
Author Gregory Maguire wrote Wicked in 1995 to become a Broadway hit. The Broadway musical premiered on October 30th, 2003. The musical starred Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, who played Glinda and Elphaba, respectively. Chenoweth and Menzel both made an appearance in the 2024 movie, Wicked. The new Wicked stars Ariana Grande playing Glinda, Cynthia Erivo playing Elphaba, and Jonathan Bailey playing Prince Fiyero. The box office hit over 500 million dollars for the movie internationally. All the songs Grande and Erivo sang were recorded live on set. The same day Wicked premiered in all theaters, the second movie, Wicked: For Good was announced, releasing November 21st, 2025.
Thriller:
The popular physiological thriller, The Housemaid, written by author Freida Mcfadden, is set to release on Christmas day in 2025. Sydney Sweeney is set to play Millie, the main character who is desperate for a job and currently living in her car after being incarcerated for 10 years. The Winchesters take her in as the housemaid and nanny of their daughter. The Winchesters seem like a perfect family, having a spotless home, a beautiful daughter, and being overall loved by everyone. Andrew, who will be played by Brandon Sklenar, is rich, handsome, and kind to Millie, however Nina is the opposite. Millie cooks, cleans, and provides for the family but Nina finds fault in everything Millie does. Nina, who is played by Amanda Seyfried, is portrayed as controlling, temperamental, and ill-mannered to Millie. Millie starts to notice strange things around the house happening. She has to save herself and not let her secrets unravel.
Colleen Hoover, international and #1 New York Times bestselling author, is popular for writing romance, YA, and thriller. Verity is one of her bestselling books. Verity came out in 2018 and has amassed over three million ratings on Goodreads. Struggling writer, Lowen Ashleigh, is offered to finish renowned author Verity Crawford’s popular book series when an accident left Verity in a coma-like state unable to continue the series. Lowen agrees and moves in with the family. Jermey Crawford is a struggling, grieving father after losing their daughter, who is devoted to Verity getting better.
