The United Students of Atherton is a fairly new club organized by Danny Hazelip. It was formed so that students would have a platform to communicate with Atherton students and staff, as well as have a means of organizing. The idea is to create room for student involvement.
Students who are interested in politics, want to learn more about class and labor, or want to be more involved with the community are encouraged to join.
“[I want] to set this up so it will last beyond me, the person who started it. And then, I also want to be respected as an organization or group to be taken seriously by staff or higher-ups at school,” says Hazelip regarding the club’s goals.
Other plans that have been discussed are collecting data on problems plaguing the school and addressing inequalities.
“It’s not that serious. We’re not gonna be like, ‘Oh you can’t talk about that, you can’t do that’. ‘Cause we’re not like that. There’s a lot of student engagement and there’s no one leader. It’s very based off what the group says, and even when there’s disagreements, they’re very cordial.” says Hazelip on what he wants people to know about the club, Hazelip replied,
This club also has plans to organize to create a larger, united front for students to stand up for themselves and make their voices heard by other students, staff, parents, administrators, and the board.
The club’s motto is the same as Atherton’s: Be the change you want to see.
