Ms. Bennett is in her 21st year of teaching. She teaches freshman biology as well as marine biology; her favorite part of her subjects is, “how interconnected everything is.”
While working towards her teaching degree, Ms. Bennet worked as a substitute teacher. She hadn’t known of Atherton before being assigned here to sub, and recalls she knew Atherton was home from when she first walked in. Her favorite part of Atherton is the different kinds of people and the respect for diversity.
Ms. Bennett spends her free time raising her backyard chickens, cooking, going to church and spending time with her kids.
Ms. Bennett worked as an environmental consultant before becoming a teacher. She asserts that if she was not teaching, she would be doing something related to biology or science education.
She recounts her most notable teaching experience as a time in which four students snuck up to her classroom with an injured bird. Said bird proceeded to fly around and terrorize the classroom, which attracted a crowd of students out in the hall.
As much as Ms. Bennett cares for her students, she gets worried when students seem to not want to try. She advises students to have a learning spirit and learn to work through the struggle that comes with it.
