Ms. Slucher teaches Biology at Atherton High School, both at the freshman and IB level.
Slucher decided that she wanted to be a teacher in the 5th grade after discovering her talent for helping others in her class with schoolwork.
“Other kids often asked me to help with their assignments and I enjoyed helping others learn.”
In middle school, Slucher developed her love of biology. Her science teachers in the 7-9th grades provided memorable experiences that helped her learn. Now as a teacher herself, Slucher has advice for students on how to succeed in biology.
“The key to biology is understanding vocabulary. Biology words make sense once you learn all the prefixes, root words, and suffixes. Once you know that, you can guess what most words are, even if you haven’t heard them before,” Slucher says. “Some of my favorite moments are when kids finally understand a concept after working through it.”
As for general advice, Slucher says students should take advantage of their teenage years.
“Get your school work done, but enjoy spending time with your friends because you will not be able to spend as much time with people at other stages of your life. Do the fun things.”
For fun, Slucher enjoys embroidery, cooking/learning dishes from different cultures, and cross stitching.
