Derby weekend is a very exciting time for many people in Louisville, Kentucky. The event before the Derby, Oaks, is very popular for Atherton students to attend.

Isla Fisher (11) is looking forward to spending the day with her brother.
“We are going to the infield and then we are going to bet on the horses. Then we will just enjoy it and see everyone then go home. I’m most excited to bet on the horses with my brother because it’s really exciting,” said Fisher.
Katie Dykes (12) is excited to attend the event with her friends.
“I am going to have brunch with my friends and ride down to the track and watch the horses. Hopefully I’ll be able to go back to my friends house afterwards too. I’m excited to eat good food and

see the horses run. I’m also excited to dress up with my friends and see people I haven’t seen in a while,” said Dykes.
Some students may not be going to Oaks, but will still enjoy the event by going to parties with friends and family.
Asa Hagman (11) plans on staying in with his friends to watch the event.
“We are going to hang out at our friends house during it and watch the Oaks race. We bet on which horse will win and just eat good food and have fun together,” said Hagman.
Lucien Reid (12) has attended Oaks before and is excited to go again.

“I’m hosting a brunch with all of my friends because I live close to Churchill Downs. Then we are going to Oaks all day until about 8 and then just hang out and have fun after that. I’ve been lucky enough to go the past three years, and I’m very grateful that I have the opportunity,” Reid said.
Reid also is going to the Derby, and even gets an exclusive look at it.
“This will be my second derby ever. I’m really lucky to have my friend’s grandparents own one of the most famous pony horses on the backside, so we get to go backside for the Derby which is really exclusive. I love Derby,” said Reid.

This time of year is very exciting for many around Louisville, and even people who come in just to see the horse races. Lucien Reid leaves us with some positivity.
“It’s a great time in Louisville for kids growing up, and even if you can’t go there is so much to do around town like festivals and marathons, so enjoy it. Have a good Derby.”
