Dr. Swanson is one of Atherton’s counselors and has been with JCPS for 26 years. Swanson has been here at Atherton for 7 years.
Before counseling, Swanson began with an environmental biology degree but quickly learned she wanted to pursue something different. Swanson started substitute teaching and enjoyed it, which led her to getting her teacher credential through an alternative certification program with Bellarmine University.
Swanson was an elementary school teacher, district social studies resource teacher, and a human resource teacher prior to counseling. During her time as a resource teacher, Swanson was all over schools in JCPS, supporting teachers and social study instruction. Shortly after that, she earned her second masters degree, which allowed her to get her counseling certification.
Outside of school, Swanson spends time with her son who is involved in many sports. Swanson explains how she is “his personal taxi”. She loves being with her friends, cooking, and baking for those she loves.
A piece of advice Swanson has for her students is to “be persistent”. Dr. Swanson teaches a class after school for UofL students pursuing an education in teaching to help remind people their dreams are always in reach.
“If one door closes, always know there are other opportunities out there. Don’t give up, and don’t let anyone tell you your dreams are out of reach.” Dr. Swanson said.
