You can tell Valentine’s Day is near because the store shelves become filled with heart shaped chocolates, bouquets, and hallmark cards. However, in recent years, a new celebration of love has been on the rise. Galentines Day has emerged to recognize the joy of female friendships, and the mutual support they have for one another.
This unofficial holiday made its first appearance in the American sitcom, “Parks and Recreation”. The main character, Leslie, hosted a brunch for her female friends, declaring it a day of “ladies celebrating ladies.” This storyline resonated with the world, as people saw it as an opportunity of empowerment during a time that usually comes with pressure or sadness to fulfill a relationship.
Many girls at Atherton have begun to celebrate Galentine’s Day over the past few years, helping redefine what the season of love can mean.
“My friends are my favorite to spend this day with because that’s just who I feel the most loved by,” said Ruby Cardin (11). “We get each other and we have fun together.”

Galentine’s celebrations can be anything that brings friends together in order to connect and show gratitude. Leia Monti (11) and her friends enjoy celebrating with Valentine’s Day oriented activities.
“We have dinners, do crafting, and we’re going to make heart shaped pizzas,” said Monti. “And maybe watch some rom coms.”
Valentine’s Day is being reshaped by the women who think love should be shared with more than just romantic partners. Albah Kah (11) thinks the importance of appreciating all your loved ones should be sought out with compassion.
“Your friends are there for you a lot of your entire life, and I feel like that’s really important,” said Kah.
