This past Wednesday, teachers raised awareness towards JCPS for investments that target the needs of students.
The peaceful protest was held by teachers of the Jefferson County Teacher Association (JCTA). Teachers sought to address issues in their ongoing contract negotiations with JCPS. Teachers gathered outside their school buildings carrying signs, hoping to address their issues with JCPS.
Teachers are also advocating for more learning time, less testing time, and increased opportunities for personalized learning experiences.
“With the budgetary issues that JCPS is having, we want to make sure that the money that we do have goes to things that are really important,” John Davisson said.
Teachers know best when it comes to their students. They deserve a chance to provide an enhanced learning experience while receiving justifiable earnings.
“We are raising awareness of the issue of the defunding of the public school system that the current administration is trying to do in this country and take away the Department of Education,” Nicki Marzian said.
Teachers state that funding supports a large amount of JCPS programs such as school lunches and special education services. Any cuts could negatively impact these programs and deprive students and teachers of opportunities.
“What goes on with the schools affects not just the standards, but also the entire community and future,” Mr. Davisson said.
