On November 19th, the Kentucky Department of Education released the Kentucky School Report Card data for the 2024-2025 school year. The report cards include information on Kentucky’s Districts and schools state assessment performance’s, graduation rates, postsecondary readiness rates, school culture and safety scores, and more. But there has been a big focus on the assessment scores in particular in the media, specifically JCPS’s performance on state tests. News organization spectrum 1 released an article titled “Nearly all of the state’s lowest performing schools are in the JCPS,” painting the district as doing poorly. On the other hand, WDRB published an article with a seemingly more nuanced headline that read “JCPS sees gains in science, math, and graduation rates despite ongoing challenges.” WLKY’s headline had a similar style, reading “JCPS’ latest report card shows record high for graduation, but setbacks in other areas.”
However, despite the difference in tone between these articles, all of them admit that JCPS is facing some challenges, which raises the question: how well did the district actually do? In this episode of What’s Everyone Raven About? Miles Davis looks at how both JCPS and Atherton did on state assessments, and what measures the district is considering to take in response to the results.
