Every year, the junior class officers plan an exciting spirit week in honor of the basketball homecoming. The officers work closely to design a fun week that encourages participation, individuality, and thrill to prepare for homecoming.
Spirit Week kicked off on Monday, January 5 with Pajama Day, giving students the perfect excuse to show up to school in their comfiest outfits. From stuffed animals, to cozy slippers, many students had enjoyed the relaxed vibe set coming from their first day off break.
“I loved that I got to come to school in a comfy outfit right after break and I didn’t really have to put effort into my outfit,” said junior Sophie Dearner.
On Tuesday, the halls transformed into a zoo for Zoo Day, as students dressed as their favorite animals. From seeing the Junior class president in a full on bunny costume, to seeing the senior class president in a penguin costume, the theme added humor and enthusiasm to the school day.
Sophomore Zoe Englert dressed up as a bunny. “I enjoyed being able to draw on my face and dress unusually for school, I mean what other day of the year would you get to dress as an animal?”
Wednesday was Anything but a Backpack Day, where students brought literally anything but a backpack. Chromebooks, Textbooks, and Pencils were carried around in laundry baskets, suitcases, wagons, and even shopping carts.
Sophomore class vice president Grace Goss was especially excited for this day. She showed up to school with a suitcase and enjoyed wheeling it around throughout the hallways.
“Bringing a suitcase took the weight off my shoulders and I just loved participating in such a fun tradition I’ve seen other schools do,” said Goss.
The fun continued on Thursday with 2020 Day. Students dressed in outfits inspired by trends and memories from the memorable year 2020. Crocs, Indie fashion, Vsco style, and a throwback to quarantine brought a wave of nostalgia throughout the building. Students had fun reminiscing on their old selves and bringing that person back to life.
The week concluded on Friday with the traditional Class Colors Day. Freshmen proudly wore white, sophomores boldly wore gold, juniors confidently wore maroon, and seniors honorably wore black. Each class showcased their colors with unity and pride.
This year’s last spirit week was overall a success. Junior class vice president Ben Swain elaborated on why he loves spirit week so much.
“Spirit week allows students to show off their creativity and express themselves in a funny and artistic way, I can not wait to plan next year’s spirit week and I hope we gave the seniors a great last spirit week.”
The participation throughout the week reflected the strong sense of community and pride within Atherton. Spirit week is a shared moment for students across all grades to come together and create memories, but for seniors it’s a lasting memory as they prepare to close out their final year.
