Now that winter break is over, Ravens are thinking about their next school year. With the upcoming new year, students are thinking about what classes they would want to sign up for. Depending on the upcoming grade, students have a new class to look forward to. Dual credit math is a new class at Atherton for seniors, Math 111 and 115. Taking place in the first semester and second semester, the class features a variety of math including college algebra and stats, which most students will learn in college. The class works with Kentucky State University for both courses.
When signing up for the class for scheduling, it might be an option or you’ll be placed in there depending on the act score and GPA. The class is very beneficial due to the lessons being taught. Students learn new formulas that will help when buying a car or even a house, then going into college algebra their second semester. Depending on a student’s major, they’ll be able to knock out the college algebra their senior year, meaning they wouldn’t have to take the course in college as it would be fulfilled. However, if a student will be studying a major that includes more math, they’ll have a head start on what they’ve learned.
Emmalynne Harrity (12) had the opportunity to be in the class. Harrity loves the class and how it will prepare her for college after high school.
“It’s a really awesome opportunity for us as students because at least for my degree, I won’t have to take another math class again in college,” Harrity said.
“Mr. Sick is really wonderful, and he’s really helped me through the class. I am able to plan out my homework and get all my work done while being successful in the class.”

Currently, Mr. Sick is the first and only teacher that teaches the course. Mr. Sick gave more insight on the class and how it will benefit his students in the future.
“One of the barriers for a lot of students in college is Math. The significance of that is for a lot of majors, College Algebra may be the highest level of math you need to complete. On top of that, taking College Algebra is a significantly different experience in College. You probably meet twice a week to take notes. Most work is done outside class. Depending on your College, you may even be in a room with 100 kids,” Sick said.
He exclaimed if a student is willing to try, it will be worth it in the end. “If you get a C or better in both fall and Spring, you will have 6 credit hours of math. This is saving you thousands in tuition. The best part is, depending on your major, most of you would be done with math except for maybe a Stats class in college.”
The new course gives students many future benefits for their senior year, but also in college. Ending off, Sick added two more notes to help a student when going into their senior year.
“One thing I want to stress is 1) you have to qualify for the course and 2) this is not a course you can join if you are not willing to work,” Sick said.
