Seniors have suffered through standardized testing for the past 3 years, but now they will get a break doing their senior day of service. While Juniors take the SAT, Freshmen and Sophomores take the CERT test in preparation for the SAT. With all the testing, that leaves seniors with nothing to do in the building. So, they are encouraged by the school to go out and contribute to their community in a positive way.
Amber Sutherlend wanted to learn on his Senior Day of Service.
“I’m going to the Library to read history books,” Sutherland (12) said.
Senior Day of Service is an annual event for students. Sutherland thinks it’s important that he is excused from school to go out and learn on his own.
“School doesn’t teach subjective history, and there are some things that you want to learn in school that they don’t teach. So it’s important to learn outside of school,” Sutherland said.
What you can do on the day is very open when it comes to service. Lillian Borkowski plans to help the environment.
“I’m going to Joe Creason Park to pick up trash,” Borkowski (12) said.

Sometimes all you need is a push, and an excused day of school can do just that.
“Getting a day off from school is like motivation to actually do it; also, I don’t think they have a clean-up crew for the park,” Borkowski said.
No matter what Seniors choose to do, you’re giving back to the community. Atherton is an IB school, service goes into all the learner profiles. It is important that Atherton and students exemplify that.
