Atherton’s librarian Susan Gasaway and library clerk Cynthia Phelps are hard at work organizing and setting up a new addition in the school’s ever expanding book collection.
The Academy Library is a collection of new books that are all related to one of Atherton’s pathways. Books pertaining to engineering, media arts, and health sciences will be available for students to check out if they want to expand their knowledge.

“It’s kind of like a library within a library,” said Gasaway. “We curated the collection by looking at what is studied in those pathways and really trying to support what the teachers are doing in the classroom.”
Gasaway had the idea since she worked at her previous school.
“I brought it up to Mr. Chandler and Dr. Fluhr, and they were really on board and were willing to give me the money to kind of get it started this year,” said Gasaway.
Even though the library already contains over 500 new titles, the collection will continue to grow.
“Technology is always changing, so we always have to keep it updated. You know, probably every year we need to look and see what new things we can add,” said Gasaway.
Phelps has enjoyed the process of putting the library together.

“We’ve learned a few things in processing the books and [about] different people,” said Phelps. “Six freshmen came in this morning to see [the library], which is really exciting.”
The library’s grand opening is tomorrow, so make sure to stop by and check out this new collection of resources for students!
